Early Taxco Jewelry

William Spratling, an American, opened his silver shop in Taxco, Mexico in 1929. It continued to grow until he had over 400 workers in 1946 and influenced the opening of hundreds of other workshops. By the 1940’s, Spratling was an internationally known silver designer. Sometimes appearing Art Deco in design, his heavy, finely made creations were actually inspired by pre-Hispanic and ranch motifs. His silver, siler and stone, and unique silver and wood pieces, void of trivial decoration, have become classics.
